Leeward Renewable Energy (LRE) has finalized its 200 MW Morrow Lake Solar initiative, situated in Frio County, Texas, and delivering renewable energy to Microsoft Corp. under a previously established long-term power procurement agreement.
Morrow Lake Solar represents the first of two solar installations developed through the agreement with Microsoft and marks LRE’s second venture in Frio County, located opposite its 200 MW Horizon Solar project.
Morrow Lake Solar generated over 300 jobs during peak construction, with 112 being local recruits. The initiative employs First Solar ultra-low carbon, thin-film photovoltaic solar modules.
Morrow Lake Solar implemented strong practices that enhance soil vitality, protect indigenous plant species, and boost biodiversity, including the introduction of sheep grazing for managing vegetation. The project has also promoted various community initiatives, including educational programs, and contributed to local events such as toy drives and holiday festivities.
LRE acquired the Morrow Lake Solar Project in 2023 from Red River, a collaboration of SunChase and Eolian, which commenced the development of the Morrow Lake Solar Project in 2017.
