Simple guide to installing solar panels at home - Your Ultimate Guide to Effortlessly Installing Solar Panels at Home

If you’re experiencing regular power outages or wish to cut down your monthly electricity expenses, installing solar panels on your roof is an excellent solution. But how do you get started? This guide will lead you through the installation process of solar panels, the tools you’ll require, and how to carry it out safely.

Step 1: Assemble the Solar System Components

To begin with, evaluate the installation location on your roof. You’ll need to confirm that the panels can face south, the rooftop is sturdy enough, and there is adequate space for wiring and maintenance. If everything checks out, it’s time to gather the essential solar components such as PV modules (the panels), an inverter, batteries (if necessary), and other balance of system (BoS) items.

Step 2: Transport Components to the Roof

Next, carefully convey the solar panels anddifferent materials to the rooftop. A single solar panel may weigh approximately 32 kg, so handle it cautiously to prevent damage. If you’re installing a modest system, you can utilize manpower to lift the panels. For larger projects, you might require equipment such as a chain pulley system.

Step 3: Assemble the Mounting Framework

As some team members transport the materials, others can commence arranging the mounting framework. Ensure the front and back legs are correctly positioned, with the shorter leg at the front and the longer leg at the back. Use M10 bolts to secure the framework to the rooftop.

Step 4: Attach the Solar Panels

Once the mounting framework is set, carefully attach the solar panels using nuts and bolts. Confirm that each panel is firmly fixed to the framework.

Step 5: Install the Inverter

After securing the panels, install the solar inverter, which transforms solar energy into electricity for your home. The inverter should be situated in a sheltered location away from direct sunlight and rain, at a height of approximately 5 to 6 ft from the ground.

Step 6: Install the Battery (If Necessary)

If you’re setting up an off-grid or hybrid system, a battery will need to be installed. For grid-tied systems, a battery is not necessary. If you have a lead-acid battery, you’ll connect it in series, but this is not required for lithium batteries.

Step 7: Install DCDB & ACDB

Install the DC Distribution Box (DCDB) and AC Distribution Box (ACDB) in proximity to the inverter. These boxes help manage the flow of electricity between your panels, inverter, and home. Position the DCDB to the left and the ACDB to the right of the inverter, approximately 1.5 ft apart.

Step 8: Install the Lightning Arrester & Earthing Kit

A lightning arrester and earthing kit are crucial for safety. These components shield your system from lightning strikes and ensure everything is grounded. For grid-tied systems, you will need three separate earthing arrangements: one for the DCDB, one for the inverter and ACDB, and one for the lightning arrester.

Step 9: Complete the Wiring

With the physical installation finished, it’s time to connect the wiring. This step should be performed by a professional, as it involves linking various wires from the solar panels, electricity board, and the household load. Ensure all connections are secure.

Step 10: Test the System

Finally, test the system to confirm everything is functioning correctly. For an on-grid system, this includes verifying the connection to the electricity meter. For off-grid or hybrid systems, you will also need to check the load distribution. Once testing is complete, tidy up the rooftop and inverter area.

Tools You’ll Require

To set up a rooftop solar system, you’ll need various tools, such as wrenches, drills, fasteners, and safety equipment. Ensure you have everything at hand before commencing the installation.
