The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany (BSH) has issued a tender for the preliminary geophysical investigation of offshore wind farm sites located in Zones 3 and 4 of the German North Sea exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
This contract encompasses activities planned for 2027 and 2028, aimed at collecting seabed and subsurface data necessary for the development of offshore wind projects in accordance with Germany’s Site Development Plan (FEP).
The survey program will include comprehensive multibeam echosounder measurements with backscatter data acquisition, side-scan sonar surveys accompanied by grab sampling and underwater video for verification purposes, as well as line-based magnetometer and sediment-echosounder surveys. Additionally, localized inspections will be performed using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to confirm the presence of underwater objects.
The contract also contains an option for similar survey work in 2029 and 2030 in alternative areas within the German North Sea EEZ. The BSH has indicated that any potential follow-on work will be contingent upon requirements established by the Offshore Wind Act (WindSeeG) and the FEP.
Applications for the tender will be accepted until September 29, 2026.
Zone 3 encompasses sites from N-9 to N-13, while Zones 4 and 5 include areas N-14 to N-20, which are designated for potential future offshore wind development.
BSH is currently in the process of updating its plans and timelines for various designated offshore wind zones. In June 2026, the agency published a draft amendment to the FEP, which includes proposed changes regarding sites N-10.1, N-10.2, N-12.4, N-12.5, N-13.1, and N-13.2.
The finalization of the new amendment to the FEP is anticipated in the third quarter of 2026.
