The Chinese solar module producer Longi conveyed its interest in establishing a solar manufacturing facility in Algeria during a recent dialogue with officials from the nation’s Ministry of Energy and Mining.
A representative from Longi informed pv magazine that the firm showcased its newest high-efficiency back-contact (BC) solar technology and deliberated on opportunities for localized production in Algeria, in accordance with the country’s industrial growth and national integration agenda.
“The Algerian government demonstrated its vigorous endorsement for initiatives that generate industrial value and appreciated Longi’s pledge to aid in sustainable industrialization,” the representative further noted.
The ministry indicated in a statement that the discussions also centered on evaluating options to bolster collaboration among enterprises in the sector. Investment prospects in solar initiatives, green hydrogen technology, and energy storage in Algeria were also highlighted.
“The meeting created a platform to explore future cooperation, especially in localizing the solar panel sector in Algeria based on solar cells,” the ministry mentioned. “This will enhance local content within the renewable energy sphere and fortify Algeria’s ambitions to serve as an industrial and export hub.”
The parties also explored the potential for forming strategic collaborations with local entities and national research institutions as part of bilateral agreements.
Earlier this month, Longi disclosed that its unique hybrid interdigitated back contact (HIBC) crystalline silicon solar cell, utilizing a full-size silicon wafer, attained a world record power conversion efficiency of 27.81%.
In January, Algeria reissued a tender for three solar schemes aggregating 520 MW in capacity. As per the latest data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the nation possessed a cumulative solar capacity of 462 MW by the end of 2024, unchanged from the previous year.
