US 101 is identified as the Oregon Coast Highway No. 9, as it traverses the Oregon Coast area. A significant portion of the highway runs between the Pacific Ocean and the Oregon Coast Range, making US 101 predominantly mountainous in nature. Between Newport and Lincoln City, the highway is quite rugged, as the Coast Range extends into the ocean. Towns along the path include Depoe Bay, Otter Rock (accessible via a side road), and the Gleneden Beach/Salishan region, renowned for its resorts. Close to Siletz Bay lies the deserted settlement of Kernville, followed by Lincoln City.
