The Laos Monsoon 600 Megawatt Wind Energy Initiative, carried out by POWERCHINA, successfully powered its 500-kilovolt booster station as well as No 1 and No 2 115kV booster stations on February 16 and 17, under the oversight of the Electricity of Vietnam, the project owner.

The initiative includes a single 500 kV booster station, a 27-kilometer 500 kV transmission corridor, four 115 kV booster stations, along with a 34-kilometer 115 kV transmission line. It is the first of its type in Laos and signifies the largest single-unit wind energy project in Southeast Asia. Additionally, it stands as the first cross-border (Vietnam-Laos) renewable energy transmission project within Asia.
Situated in Sekong Province in southern Laos, the initiative confronted considerable challenges due to its hilly geography, resource constraints, and the monsoon period from May to October, complicating the procurement, logistics, and setup of equipment.
The initiative transmits electricity to Vietnam through a 500 kV overhead line. POWERCHINA implemented proactive measures, surmounted various difficulties, and finalized the grid site acceptance and energization impressively within 11 days. Additionally, the 115 kV booster station reached energization four days sooner than the original timeline.
