RWE has selected Thyborøn Port as the offshore development hub for its 1.1 GW Thor offshore wind project in Denmark.
Thyborøn will serve as the home port for the project’s service vessels and the management centre for coordinating marine logistics and site visits throughout the offshore development phase.
Additionally, secondary steel structures can be managed from the Danish port during the foundation installation phase commencing in spring 2025.
For this purpose, Buss Ports will lease and operate an area of approximately 100,000 square metres along with the corresponding quay in the southern section of the port.
“Thyborøn will be crucial in the successful delivery of our Thor project – Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date. Secondary steel structures, such as boat landings for the foundations, will be handled there,” stated Günther Fenle, Project Director for Thor at RWE.
“Thyborøn Port will provide us with essential facilities and port infrastructure, while Buss Ports will oversee the port logistics. Thyborøn will be home to the Thor team for over two years as they manage all construction activities.”
In April of last year, RWE opted for Dajin Offshore and EEW SPC to deliver 36 monopiles each, along with secondary structures, for the Thor offshore wind farm.
The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) recently issued RWE the offshore development permit for Thor, allowing the developer to commence offshore operations in spring 2025.
Onshore activities are currently underway, including cable installation on land, constructing an onshore substation in Lemvig municipality, and establishing the operations and maintenance (O&M) base for the project.

At the beginning of 2025, seabed preparation for construction activities will take place, and offshore development will commence in spring with the installation of the foundations. Turbine installation is scheduled to start in 2026 and is expected to be conducted from the port of Esbjerg.
“RWE selecting Thyborøn Port as the base for the installation of secondary steel structures and as the construction base for the Thor offshore wind farm validates our strategic aim to enhance port capacity for offshore wind components. Ensuring value creation with our investments is of utmost importance; for this reason, we plan and develop new port facilities in close collaboration with our clients,” remarked Karl Kristian Bro, Chairman of the Board at Port of Thyborøn.
